We're a directory, so the compliance side stays with you. Being straight about this up front matters more than making it sound easy.
Your own licensing
Most states require a guard card, armed endorsement, or investigator licence for private work — even after a full career. A career in law enforcement does not automatically licence you. Check your state before you take paid work.
Your own insurance
Working independently means carrying your own liability coverage. Employers will ask.
